The poor audio quality is a result of several factors including variable propogation conditions, very high levels of manmade noise at the receiving site (created by 11kV high voltage power lines approximately 50m from the antenna) and the age of the tape recordings.
Hourly Time Call (Sponsored by Seiko) and Frequency Change - in English and Japanese (259K) This clip demonstrates how fast the Continental 100kW transmitter could be retuned. You will hear the receiver retune from 15405kHz to 15190kHz, the transmitter reappears within 3 seconds of the receiver retune. Notice also that the transmitter shutdown often cut off the end of the voice retuning announcement!

The automatic sequencing system would just unceremoniously cut this track off when the top of hour time announcement was required. |
KYOI Test Transmission in December 1982 on 11900kHz - in English (1208k) The first song in this recording is "Ya Ya (Anotoki wo Wasurenai)" by the Japanese Rock Band "Southern All Stars". This is one of the very rare occasions where KYOI played rock music that was not from the U.S.A./Europe. (Thanks to Masa Fukata from Japan for this information)
